Clay is Simply Wonderful
Today I'm massing up clay on an armature for a large new sculpture, and with a handful of smaller things in progress, I had to dig into my 200lb reserve of unopened WED clay purchased four years ago. The clay is a slightly stiff and a little moldy but still great. I love the magic of water-based clay. Quickly building up mass on a figure with this soft plastic material is one of my favorite things. The immediacy it allows is truly incredible, and the speed and freedom it allows are the reasons why I work with it.
It is essentially just mud. It can sit in a bag for years, completely dried out, becoming cracked and dusty, only to be rehydrated and used again, and then fired in a kiln. It is just awesome. It is an ancient material that I am happy to be able to use.
